 Style ... change?
« Thread Started on Jan 14, 2007, 9:53pm »

As I mentioned in another thread, I want to improve my ability to use my tablet. Just for fun, I experimented inking with my tablet (I still had to draw the sketch by hand though). I'm wondering if the comic would look better if I inked everything by tablet. What do you guys think?

I'm kinda torn. The pen inking is much cleaner, but the tablet inking seems more organic somehow.

I know I love using my calligraphy pens to ink but then again using the tablet gives me the option of going back later and re-working the lines.

I like the bolder lines of your tablet example, everything seems to merge together. The pen ink lines are crisper/sharper and seem to stand out more.

I agree that the pen and ink looks cleaner. you can edit mistakes digitally anyway.

The tablet inks look too thick, like it was done with a big sharpe or something. Looks like you still need more time to figure out digital inking.

Here are some of the tutorials I've used or found helpful. ^^;

Thanks for the tuts, Mod! I posted this same type of poll at DD and it seems the majority consensus is that the lines are too thick in the tablet version.

I'd have to go with the old style... crisper image. Does it save you significantly more time with the tablet? Can you tell the compy to make all the pencil lines black, and then sharpen the image for you?

Sorry if I sounded blunt. o.o My last post sounded kinda mean. ;_;

I did the last two chapters of MSK by tablet inking. It saved me loads of time. I didn't use anything larger that a 5 px brush for outlines. A majority were between 2-3px brushes with the opacity and size determined by pen pressure.
But if you compare chapter 10 to chapter 11, chapter 10 still looks better, cleaner...and Aidern looks much smexier. XD

Don't worry about it, Mod. I do need more time on figuring it out. I think tablet just takes me longer because I'm not familiar with it yet. But someone mentioned to me that another way I could improve my lineart is just by varying line width. Which would be a much easier way to change my style. I've just been avoiding that method cuz I get bored with inking.

Ah well, since most people seem to dislike the new style, I'll just vary line width, probably. For other art like my Randomness art I'll try using the tablet and the tablet tuts you gave me, Mod.

::)

It looks like you just need some time to get a feel for the pen pressure. ;)

I'm sure once you got a feel for the tablet, like anything else with practice, it would probably be great for the comic.

Hmm... Where do you get all these tutorials from Mod?

Anyways, I like the old style, but the new one does have great potential. Ya, this probably doesn't help anything. >.<

Found the tutorials deep within DeviantArt which seriously has the worst searching engine ever. (This is what happens when you let artists program. XD) Anyway, most tutorials you will find with you hit "Browse"
Then click the Categories dropdown and pick "Resources"
Then click "Tutorials" >> "Digital Art">> Drawing/Painting/Airbrushing >> Photoshop
Also make sure you're browsing "Newest" instead of "popular".

Hover over thumnails to read the titles and pick one that suits your fancy. ;)

I didn't realize dA was such a good place to find tutorials. Thanks, Mod.

And now for another style change.... Someone at Drunk Duck mentioned that my pages can be too shiney. I've always thought this, but I haven't mustered enough gumption to do anything about it ... which is why feedback is so good, cuz even one comment will motivate me to change stuff. Anyway, here's a sample of the desaturated coloring. It might be a bit too desaturated, but it's pretty easy to tweak if that's the case. I think the new coloring style is actually pretty similar to Drowtales ... though Kern's is shinier.

[You'll also note that the colored sample for the new style is the same lineart I used to depict the tablet vs pen inking.]

I like the one on the left but it looks like a night-time shot. Maybe it is. ^^; It does look considerably less shiney. Although to be fair, big moments with odd lighting do deserve shine. Your sample below was a pretty emotional piece and a moment of "enlightenment" so to speak. So the bright shiney is okay.

But it could have been dark and moody depending on what you wanted. ^^;

Yeah...DA is a treasure trove...sometimes. You have to wade through many crappy tutorials before finding the good ones. I have 5 or 6 folders chuck full of DA tutorials I found. ^^;

Shine and such is really dependent on what it is you're adding shadows/light to. Obviously, a tree trunk is going to be really flatly shaded with no spectacular lights on it, but LATEX on the other hand is going to need bright white to highlight the apex.

Er... I don't know if I said that right. Google a tree and then maybe some goth clothes and you'll see what I mean.
